In 2004, DOTA was proud to be a partner with Leo Villareal and Carter Emmart in building the dome that became the Bok Globule. The dome's designer, Dave Kennedy, died on August 13 while working with other DOTA members on the construction. We were able to carry out his plans and realize his dream of bringing Carter's Tour of the Universe to the playa. We dedicate the Bok Globule to the memory of our dear friend and brother, LVT Buddha Dave Kennedy.
Using a hemispherical projection system within a dome, Bok Globule presents immersive nightly tours of the vaults of heaven. Based on Carter Emmart's Digital Universe, a highly accurate three-dimensional map, it takes participants on interactive journeys that span from our own solar system out to the very edges of the cosmos.
Viewers, seated on gravity couches or lying on the foam cover floor of the dome, can watch computer guided video works about space, time and the cosmos in between tours of the universe. Carter, known to all BRC inhabitants as Barbie, takes viewers from Earth to the outermost regions of space and back again in a dizzying, enthralling ride.
Covering the outside of the dome, the sequenced patterns of Leo Villareal's Super-cluster beckon people from across the playa. The installation was active from dusk to dawn and closed during the day, but the dome served as a sweet shady rest spot for many weary playa travellers.
